Updated: Feb 2

I have been using Astro-Seek since the day I started learning astrology. It is by far the most comprehensive and updated free astrological software I have found. I am deeply grateful to the astro-seek developers for offering such an amazing tool to the world for free.

Considering it as a free software, it is unbelievable to find so much functionalities and tools for almost all kinds of astrological calculations needed. And it is also extremely user-friendly!

In this blog, I am going to go through astro-seek Birth Chart Calculator and show you the various information and settings that you can customise for your birth chart! Once you learn to read your birth chart on Astro-Seek, you can then begin interpreting its deeper meaning.

(If you want to find out how to generate your chart using the calculator, check out my blog on "How To Generate Your Birth Chart" here)

Kindly note that the following demo is based on "Placidus House System" setting, in a desktop view.

How To Read Your Birth Chart

An Overview Of The Main Page Of Your Birth Chart

The minute you generated your birth chart, you will see this beautiful wheel in front of you. Lo and behold! This wheel contains the blueprint of your soul purpose and life destiny!

If it is your first time seeing a birth chart, this is certainly a very overwhelming sight. Simply because everything is represented in glyphs / symbols. If you are unfamiliar with these colourful symbols, it will be quite tedious to make sense of your chart.

But no worries, let me now walk you through section by section what this whole page contains.

1) Birth Data

On the top most part of your chart, you will find this section displaying the birth data that you had entered to generate the chart. If you want to make any data correction, simply click on "Edit birth data and settings" to generate again!

2) Birth Chart Wheel

Below your birth data is your birth chart!

A birth chart (in this case) is made of 3 wheels:

  1. The inner most wheel with digits are your astrological house numbers. You can see that your House 1 of self starts from the left-hand side and the houses run sequentially in an anti-clockwise direction. This is a universal standard for everyone's chart.

  2. The outer most wheel with colourful glyphs (symbols) in red, grey, green and blue are the zodiac signs such as Aries, Taurus, etc. If you are not sure what each zodiac glyph means, you can refer to the legend on the right.

  3. The wheel in between shows you where your planets are placed in which house and zodiac sign. Similarly, if you are not sure what each planet glyph means, you can refer to the legend on the right.

The measurement for birth chart is in degrees and minutes. The wheel is 360 degrees, each Zodiac sign occupies 30 degrees (in this placidus house system).

The way we describe where a planet is, we can say "the planet Sun is 14 degrees 56 minutes in House 2 in Taurus Zodiac sign.

3) Legend

The legend to the right of your chart is super useful to understand the glyphs and symbols and their locations.

In this example, you can easily read that the "Sun" is 14 degrees 56 minutes in Taurus in House 2. Or "Venus" is 9 degrees 45 seconds in Gemini in House 2.

The "R" indicates Retrograde. (You can see this R indicated beside Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Node which means these planets are in retrograde when the person was born.)

4) Birth Chart Shape

There are several interesting tabs located above your chart that you can explore.

This tab shows you the "shape" of your birth chart as a result of the placements of your planets. Different chart shapes can tell us some interesting characteristics about ourself.

You can follow this astro-seek link to find out what each chart shape means: https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com/astrology-horoscope-chart-shapes

5) Aspect Table

We describe how each planet is associated with another planet by looking at the distance between them in the wheel, measured in degrees and minutes. The angular relationship between the planets are called "aspects".

There are 5 major aspects that we look at, mainly:

  1. Conjunctions ()

  2. Squares ()

  3. Trines ()

  4. Sextiles ()

  5. Oppositions ()

In this table example, it shows that Sun is conjunct () Moon, Mercury and Saturn.

6) Birth Chart Dominants

Another interesting tab you can explore is "Dominants".

In this table you can see which planet and element you are dominant in or lacking, as well as your signature sign.

7) Current Horoscopes

If you are adventurous enough, you can also check out the list of current horoscopes tools on the top right corner.

"Full Moons 2024 x Natal" can show you a list of dates for New Moon and Full Moon that will be transiting your chart.

If your birthday is coming, you can also check out "Solar Return" to find out the key themes of your birthday year.

"Synastry" is another popular link where you can compare your chart with your partner's to figure out the compatibility.

"Transits" can show you the current movements in the sky and how it can affect you personally.

8) Interpretations

Last but not least, if you scroll down the page, you will find an auto-generated interpretation of your birth chart! If you are new to astrology, this is the easiest as you can get in having a glimpse into what your chart says about you.

However, since this is an automated interpretation, the meanings are pretty much cookie-cut and standalone. When you attempt to put all the meanings together, you may find them contradictory and confusing. For example, it may say that your Sun is outgoing and extroverted but then you find your Mars interpretation saying you tend to be isolated and prefers to keep to yourself.

The interpretations of each planet are not wrong on its own but it needs further deep dive when we are trying to correlate different planets and aspects of the chart holistically.
